We know—moving is probably not how you’d like to spend your weekend, but with the right planning and strategy, your move can be simple, fast, and possibly even fun! Though working with an experienced Colorado moving team will help streamline the process, you still have a lot to coordinate for moving day. With so much on your plate, it’s easy to make mistakes that can end up costing you both time and money. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when moving and how you can avoid making them yourself.
You Assume Handling the Move Yourself Will Save You Money
Most people assume that doing things on their own will save them money. While this may be true for small home improvements, it’s not always true with a move. Rental trucks may seem affordable at first, but when you look at the details, the costs start to rise. In addition to the base rental price, they often charge you a per-mile fee, daily rental insurance, and expect you to fill the gas tank prior to returning the truck. If anything is damaged or the truck bed is dirty, you can expect to be charged an additional cleaning fee. Each charge may seem small, but when you add them up, you may end up spending more on a rental than you would on a professional moving team. Instead of assuming a DIY move will save you money, get estimates from a reputable company.
You Take Everything With You
If you’ve lived in the same house for years, you may be surprised at how much stuff you accumulate. Though it may be tempting to take all of your belongings with you to your new home, it’s best to spend some time sorting through your possessions. Remember, the cost of your move may be based partly on the weight of your items or the number of boxes you’re moving. The fewer boxes you move, the more money you’ll save. As you pack, take the time to go through your belongings and donate or sell the items that you no longer want. This will save you money up front while also making it easier to unpack once you’re at your new home.
Not Buying Enough Bubble Wrap
You have more fragile items than you may think. When you’re packing in a hurry, the stacking your dishes, holiday decorations, and decorative knickknacks in a box without enough padding may become commonplace. Rather than worrying about saving the little amount of bubble wrap you have on hand, buy more padding than you think you’ll need. This will give you more leeway to properly pack your fragile items without worrying about running out of materials. If you have extra left at the end of your move, sell it to a friend or post an ad online to get rid of your extra moving boxes and supplies.
