How to organize a new kitchen

If you think about packing and unpacking your home, which room gives you the most stress? If you’re like most homeowners, your answer is probably the kitchen. Believe it or not, the kitchen is often the most-used room of the house. And that means it’s often the one with the most stuff. While your moving company can haul your kitchen items to your new house, it’s up to you to organize your new kitchen. But we’re here to help. Here are a few simple tips to make getting your new kitchen ready for all that cooking a breeze.

Survey the Layout

Every kitchen will have a different layout and different cabinets. This makes organizing it a unique challenge. Before you start unpacking, take a look around the kitchen. Open the cabinets and drawers to get an idea of the size of each space. Then, start thinking about where you do the most prep work. Cabinets and drawers near this spot should be left for cutting boards, tools, and utensils. Things you use the most should always be within easy reach. Then, use sticky notes to designate what each cabinet will hold.

Bring the Boxes In

Ideally, it would help if you had labeled your kitchen moving boxes thoroughly before the movers arrived. This makes unpacking simple and lets you organize the space more quickly. Bring the boxes into the kitchen and start unpacking each one into the designated areas you’ve picked in the kitchen. Start with just the essentials. This will help you decide if the layout is truly functional or if you need to shift things around a bit. And trust us…moving things around when the kitchen is half-unpacked is far easier than waiting until you’re all moved in!

As a general rule, but little-used items away in the cabinets, you won’t need access frequently. Otherwise, these items will take up valuable real estate in your kitchen and could decrease your productivity while you’re cooking. Remember, storing kitchen equipment in the garage is always an option, especially if you have a collection of holiday baking pans you only use once a year!

Keep Track of What Goes Where

It would take a while for layouts to stick in your mind, especially if you lived in your old home for a few years. But there is a way to make it easier—keep a list. Write down where you put each type of item. For example, baking sheets and dishes go under the stove, and measuring cups go in the middle drawer on the left side of the oven. Often, the act of writing it down will be enough to cement things in your mind.
