Planning Your Monthly Budget: Understanding the Cost of Living in New Hampshire vs. Colorado

Before moving from Colorado to New Hampshire, you must determine if you can afford to live in this beautiful state. The cost of living in both New Hampshire and Colorado are very comparable. The average household will need to earn around $56,727 per year. In Colorado, the cost of living is $53,374. New Hampshire has the 7th highest cost of living in the country, while Colorado has the 16th-highest cost of living in the country.

If you are considering moving anywhere in New England, be aware that the cost of living in neighboring states to New Hampshire – including New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, is also very high.

The most significant expenses in both New Hampshire and Colorado are healthcare, housing costs, and utilities. Both these states have comparable prices for these basic life necessities – although you will, on average, pay more for housing and utilities in Colorado than in New Hampshire.

As with any other state, urban areas have a higher cost of living than rural cities. Keep this in mind when determining if you want to enjoy the hustle and bustle of big cities or would prefer to save money while thriving in the slow-paced environment of a small town.

employment sector
The jobs market in New Hampshire is dominated by services, including insurance and marketing

Finding a Fulfilling Career in the Granite State: Job Growth and The Local New Hampshire Economy

New Hampshire and the rest of the New England area have a thriving economy. This is thanks in large part to positive job growth in a variety of thriving industries, including:

  • Insurance
  • Education
  • Health care
  • Wholesale marketing

The average salary in New Hampshire is $62,860 – or approximately $30/hr. This is compared to the average salary in Colorado, which is $59,949 – or roughly $27/hr. The average salary in both states is higher than the national average of $55,640. Additionally, the unemployment rate in New Hampshire is slightly lower than in Colorado, with each having a rate of 1.9% and 2.8%, respectively.

However, these numbers are only a few pieces of a very complex puzzle, and you must consider the cost of living in both states when determining if the move from Colorado to New Hampshire is right for your family.

retirement
While New Hampshire can be cold and costly, the natural beauty of the granite state, along with it’s proximity to hubs like NYC and Boston, make it desirable for retirees

An Empty Nest and a Renewed Sense of Adventure: Is It Cheaper to Retire in New Hampshire or Colorado?

The winter in Colorado can be brutal, and one of the main reasons seniors are leaving the state is to escape the cold and enjoy more temperate climates in another state. The go-to for decades has been Florida – but is New Hampshire somewhere you should consider retiring instead?

Unfortunately, two of the biggest reasons why you should not retire to New Hampshire are the brutal winters and the higher cost of living. Once again, New Hampshire is notorious for being an expensive state to call home. Additionally, if you are looking to escape the cold, snow, and ice of winter, New Hampshire might not be your ideal choice.

On a positive note, there are several pros to retiring in New Hampshire. The state is ideally situated in New England, meaning you can easily hop in the car or take a commuter train to the Boston area, New York City, and the other cultural hubs in the surrounding states. The views in New Hampshire are immaculate, and if your grandkids are visiting in the summer, you will find endless ways to keep them entertained, including trips to the beach!

Moving to an Idyllic Safe Neighborhood: Understanding the Property Crime Rates in New Hampshire and Colorado

Whether you are a young parent or enjoying the freedom of an empty nest, you still want to ensure the place you call home is safe. Understanding the property crime rates in Colorado vs. New Hampshire is a good indication of the overall safety of both states.

Unfortunately, Colorado has one of the country’s highest rates of property crimes, with a rate of 31.4 crimes per 1,000 people. This is compared to the national average of 19.3 property crimes per 1,000 people. New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the country, with a property crime rate of 10.63 property crimes per 1,000 residents.

If safety is at the top of your list, here are a few of the safest cities in New Hampshire to call home:

  • East Kingston
  • Atkinson
  • Greenville
  • Danville
  • Brookline

The crime rates in the biggest city in New Hampshire, Manchester, are slightly higher than the average crime rates in the rest of New Hampshire. Consider this when looking for the best moving services near you in Denver.

NEW HAMPSHIRE BEACH
New Hampshire summers are infinitely more humid than in Colorado. You may find yourself escaping to the beach quite often!

A Semi-Arid Climate vs. Cool Continental Temps: The Contradictory Summers in Colorado and New Hampshire

The winters in both New Hampshire and Colorado are similar. The average snowfall in Colorado is 63 inches a year. New Hampshire receives around 68 inches per year. Both are well above the national average snowfall of 28 inches per year. The snowfall totals in each state can differ significantly depending on your location.

For example, you will experience more snowfall in the upper Rocky Mountains and northern New Hampshire. Both states’ temperatures are similarly cold in the winter. It is not uncommon for the temperatures to drop below freezing for several weeks between October and March – and for you to experience a few days of below-zero temperatures.

Where the two states differ is in the summer months. Colorado has a semi-arid climate because of its higher elevations. This translates into hot, dry summers where temperatures rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of the state’s proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, New Hampshire has a continental climate, meaning you will experience humid, uncomfortable temperatures during the summer.

If you prefer the dry Colorado summers, you will likely not enjoy the sticky summers in New Hampshire.

education in NH
Whether you opt for public or private education, your children’s tuition is in good hands in New Hampshire!

Preparing Your Kids for the Ivy League: The Preeminent Schools in New Hampshire

property tax nh
Despite having no sales or income tax, New Hampshire levys some pretty hefty property tax on it’s residents. Be sure to verify your mortgage payments with your lender!

Navigating the Financial Landscape: Sales Taxes, Property Taxes, and Income Tax in New Hampshire

Colorado’s tax system is very straightforward, and compared to other states’ state taxes, you only pay a little in taxes living in the Centennial State. Presently, Colorado has a flat individual income tax rate of 4.40%. Each separate jurisdiction collects local income taxes. The state sales tax rate is 2.90%, and the property tax rate is one of the lowest in the country at an astonishing 0.48%!

You will probably be pleasantly very surprised to learn that New Hampshire doesn’t currently levy income tax or sales tax. This begs the question: How does New Hampshire pay for its infrastructure, local services, and public education?

Unsurprisingly, New Hampshire has some of the highest property taxes in the entire country at 1.77%. The median yearly property tax bill in the state of New Hampshire is $6,097. This number can significantly impact your monthly mortgage payment and could mean higher rent prices, as property owners must offset the larger property tax bill.

While researching and comparing the best moving companies in your area to plan a relocation to New Hampshire, keep the tax rates before purchasing property in the Granite State.

nh lake district
You wont find more glorious natural backdrops outside of Colorado like you do in New Hampshire!

The Enchanting Lakes Region: Exploring the Serene Beauty of New Hampshire’s Lake District

Located in the east-central portion of the state, the Lake’s Region is situated just south of the White Mountains Region and extends into the state’s border with Maine. The area is known for its incredible lakes, including the largest lakes – Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam Lake, and Newfoundland Lake.

In addition to boating and kayaking the lakes and rivers of the area, New Hampshire’s Lake District also features some fantastic yearly activities, most notably the Laconia Motorcycle Week. The kids have several educational opportunities, including the Squam Lakes Science Center, Winnipesaukee Railroad, and the M/S Mount Washington Boat.

While you and your family are touring the Lake District, stop at the Castle in the Clouds. The “castle” in the name is called Lucknow, a 16-room arts and crafts mansion built amongst the beautiful Ossipee mountains in 1914. In addition to exploring the estate, you can stroll the grounds, which boast an impressive view of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Embracing the Vibrant New Hampshire Summer: A Season of Festivities and Fun

Nothing beats summer in Colorado, and if you are moving to New Hampshire, you want to ensure there are just as many fun summer activities to keep your kids busy while you wait for school to start! Luckily, there are several beautiful festivals, fairs, and other activities to fill the summer months. Here are a few of the best recreational opportunities throughout the state:

  • Get rowdy at the Jericho ATV Festival. Hosted in the Jericho Mountain State Park, which was built with UTVs, ATVs, and biking in mind, the Jericho ATV Festival is the perfect way to get muddy on the back of an ATV. In addition to the festivities, including a mud race, you can hike, bike, and fish through the state park.
  • Pitch a tent in the NH State Park. Looking for a safe and quiet place to bike, hike, swim, and camp with your friends and family? New Hampshire State Park is 64,000 acres large and features several dozen camping sites. You can reserve your camping spot online. Be aware that because this is a popular vacation spot, you should book your spot at least a month in advance.
  • Explore the Madison Boulder. Located in Madison, NH, the Madison Boulder Natural Area has a lot to offer, including well-kept hiking and biking trails. The highlight of the area is the Madison Boulder, a massive granite boulder that was formed over 200 million years ago. What makes the boulder so amazing is that it has withstood the elements for so many centuries with minimal erosion.
  • Marvel at Sugar Hill’s Blooming Fields. One of New Hampshire’s most memorable and popular summertime activities, the Sugar Hill Lupine Festival is a must-see for anyone driving through or moving to New Hampshire. The festival’s highlight is the acres of lupines, colorful flowers that grow in beautiful shades of purple and pink.

In addition to these wonderful activities, there are several other ways to spend a Sunday afternoon in New Hampshire, including booking a hot air balloon, having a picnic in any of the state’s numerous parks, or rock climbing on Mount Washington.

Here are a few simple tips to help you connect with your neighbors and community in your new hometown:

Enjoying New Hampshire’s Sports Scene: Cheering for the Home Teams in the Heart of New England

Sports is in your blood, which is one of the reasons you have loved called Colorado home. There are no professional sports teams in all of New Hampshire – but this doesn’t mean you have you give up your love for football, baseball, basketball, or hockey. There are several college and minor league teams in New Hampshire, including the University of New Hampshire Wildcats and Dartmouth College Big Green – both of which are Division athletic programs.

New England boasts several professional sports teams, including the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, New York Jets, New York Mets, and Boston Bruins – to name a few.

NH HOUSING MARKET
While homes in New Hampshire may be cheaper than in Colorado, don’t forget about NH property tax and choose wisely!

Exploring Home Prices: How New Hampshire Compares to the National Average

Purchasing a home is still the American dream, but the current housing market can make it almost impossible for the average American to manifest this fantasy. Comparing the median home prices in Colorado and New Hampshire is the most straightforward way to determine if you can afford a home in the Granite State.

The median sale price of a home in Colorado is $580,900, which is 4.1% lower than in 2022. The median home sale price in the state of New Hampshire is lower at $452,700. The housing prices in New Hampshire are on the rise compared to past years.

As with moving to any other state, there are several simple ways you can save a lot of cash on purchasing a home in New Hampshire. Surprisingly, the median home sale price for a home in Manchester, NH, which is the biggest city in the state, is $399,900 – which is lower than the state’s median home selling price. Do your research and consider the average cost of living and the median home prices when choosing where to move in New Hampshire.

MOVING TIPS

Settling In with Ease: Tips to Hire Reliable Movers for Your Colorado to New Hampshire Move

Are you researching “movers near me” on the internet to plan a long-distance move to New Hampshire? Or have you decided to stay in Colorado and need to hire dedicated local movers in your area? With all the available options, finding reliable movers in your area can feel impossible.

Here are a few simple tips to help you hire some fantastic movers in the Denver area:

  • Learn to recognize moving scams. The majority of movers in the Denver area are amazing people who want to provide unparalleled customer service. Unfortunately, there are other companies looking to make a quick buck. Avoiding scam long-distance moving companies is critical. For example, some common red flags include companies that provide a quote without inventorying your household goods or expect you to pay upfront for all their services.
  • Ask friends and family for recommendations. You rely on your friends and family to help raise your kids or provide extra hands to load a moving truck! Loved ones are also a great source of information about moving companies. Ask them to recommend moving companies they have had success with in the past.
  • Check out the BBB website. The Better Business Bureau, or BBB, is an independent rating company that reviews many businesses, including moving companies. Check out the BBB website to find reputable local and long-distance movers in your area.

Researching moving companies online and checking out their services and websites, including whether or not they provide packing and storage or if they are specialty movers, will help you narrow down your options.

searching for movers
Searching for the right movers can be easy if you have all the right questions to hand!

Simplifying the Move: Choosing the Right Moving Company for Your Journey to New Hampshire

Generally, you should receive at least three to four moving quotes. The quote should include a moving window and the overall cost of the move. While discussing the financial aspects of moving, ask your movers the right questions to ensure you find the ideal company for your budget and requirements.

Here are a few critical questions to ask cross-country moving companies:

  • What is the cost? Start with the big question: How much does it cost to move long-distance? In most cases, a moving company will work with you to develop a number you are comfortable with.
  • When is the best time to plan a move? The time of year and even the day of the week can dramatically impact your moving costs. In most cases, moving during the “off-season” of winter and early spring is the best way to save money. Switching your moving date from the weekend to Tuesday or Wednesday can save you big money.
  • When should I start packing? Ideally, you should start packing and organizing your move at least three to six months before your proposed moving date.
packing tips
Moving boxes can easily be purchased. But you can also use suitcases and hard plastic containers for your items as well!

Simple Tips to Take the Hassle Out of Long-Distance Moving

Your family and relocation are unique. However, when it comes to moving, a few constants can ensure you plan a successful move. Here are some great tips to help you pack up and move without pulling your hair out:

  • Find creative packing materials. Forget boxes. Instead, find innovative packing materials around your home. For example, empty egg cartons make ideal packages for small objects, including jewelry.
  • Create a packing timeline. Set aside a certain amount of time each day to pack, such as one hour. This will keep you on track without getting overwhelmed.
  • Always start with the attic and garage. Start by packing spaces in your home that are traditionally used for storage, including the attic, basement, and hall closets.

I don't know what to say other than thanks Eden's! They helped me move twice now and both were smooth as you can expect a move to be. A broken cup or two but what do you expect, they moved my stuff across state lines and I have broken more moving myself, that is just part of the process. They were great about going over the coverage options too to ensure I was covered for any damages. Always get insurance for a move! Thanks again Eden's, I will recommend you to anyone!

Best prices and great to work with. You have to wait a little bit longer for your stuff but they were very upfront about the time frame, gave us a range, and called a few days ahead of time. Our move was difficult because our stuff was in storage (we had already moved and due to another moving company dropping the ball we could not get back to finalize boxing everything up). They did a great job once they arrived organizing our stuff in storage carefully. I would highly recommend.

My household has used Edens four times now with perfect results. The moved a massive Piano off the second floor – safe and quick. I hired them again with my recent long-distance move. The crew showed up on time, they were quick and careful with my stuff, and they made sure everything got placed where I'd need it.. Great experience once again. Will definitely use them again. extremely recommended.
